| Mrs. Eaton's Classroom! | | | | Gingerbread houses | Updated: January 9, 2006
Here we are starting another exciting year in third grade. During September & October our class will be studying about animal and plant habitats and the components of those habitats. We will be studying habitats first hand on a field trip to Belwin Outdoor Lab. We began cursive writing instruction on the first day of school and we are excited about putting the letters we've learned together to write words. The first two weeks of school will be dedicated to the "Getting Along Together" curriculum | | Math & Science Night | during our regular reading time. Students will participate in hands on activities relating to conflict avoidance and resolution. We start our math in "Everyday Math" with a quick review of skills learned in second grade.
December: We read and compared ten versions of the fairytale Hanse & Gretel during our reading time. This unit included art projects and the making of graham cracker "gingerbread" houses. In math, we worked on measuring in inches and centimeters and started learning multiplication facts using 0,1,2,5, | | Bean plants | & 10s. During science time we completed a unit on sound.
January: During this month we expand our multiplication facts to include 6, 7, 8, and 9s including clues that help us remember these harder facts. Math time also includes learning more about fractions and decimals as well as a unit on geometry. At the PTG meeting on Jan. 16, Mrs. Eaton will teach parents how the Everyday Math curriculum teaches partial sums (addition) and the lattice method of double digit multiplication. In science, we will study | | Math & Science Night | how seeds and plants grow while we plant, grow and harvest (and replant) beans. Students need to remember to read 30 minutes every night to keep improving their skills. We continue selling calendars and t-shirts to raise money for our overnight camp trip to YMCA Camp St. Croix in April.
February: We will visit the Como Planetarium during a science unit on the Solar System. In math we will move into using the lattice method of working double digit multiplication.
