 | | Ms. Vang and Mrs. Stewart | There is a lot of fun and learning going on in our 1st grade classrooms. We have 2 wonderful teachers, Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Vang. In 1st grade, students begin to take part in our SFA reading program. This program groups students by ability in small reading groups, providing the needed support for early reading skills. For math, the students use the Everyday Math curriculum which focuses on hands on activities. Social Studies, Science, Spelling, Language Arts, and more are also an important part of each day. Be sure to check our pages often to see all of the exciting things we are learning.
Raising Readers
First grade students and their parents were invited to school for a "Raising Readers" workshop on January 15, presented by Mrs. Stewart, Ms. Vang and Mrs. Torres. The students read the "Small Moment" storybook they created in Writer's Workshop to their parents. The mini-lessons from this theme focused on identifying and understanding the beginning, middle, and ending of a story; adding good details; writing an interesting beginning and ending; using the inner story; and developing a good title. These wonderful stories are on display on the large bulletin board near the cafeteria for everyone to enjoy.
Writers' Celebration
What a great party! Thank you to the many parents and other special people who attended our FIrst Grade Writers' Celebration on Jan. 27, 2005 at Prosperity. Students spent most of the month of January writing books about personal, special memories. The children chose their topics, wrote first drafts, edited several times for content, style, spelling and punctuation. They added pictures and painted covers. The final products were bound. To celebrate their effort and writing progress, we invited families to come and listen to children read their books. Cookies and juice added to the festivities. It was wonderful to see how much pride and happiness children showed during this joyous afternoon event. Photos are in the blue link "Writers' Celebration" in the upper right of this page.
