Fourth Grade Classroom News, October, 2006

Schedules – There is no school Oct. 19, 20 and 23 due to teacher professional training days. During short weeks like the current one, we will not have time to follow our usual spelling words program and students will not be assigned spelling homework.

Reading – The 25-book requirement is still in place and children should have read at least six books by now. Teachers take oral reports on Fridays.
Please sign the reading folder daily, except on weekends when you can sign once and draw an arrow through the other two days on the chart.

Math – We begin our third Everyday Math unit on Oct. 23, which is Multiplication. Students should study their multiplication fact cards daily and prepare for the Friday fact tests.

Writing – In our memoir writing we are exploring ways to begin, develop and conclude our memory pieces using descriptive language. You will see published memoirs at conference time.

PEP Grant Kick Off

On Saturday, September 16th, some of our students attended the PEP grant kick off event at the Wellstone Center/El Rio Vista Recreation Center.

The PEP grant is a physical education grant that our school is a part of. The goal is to fight childhood obesity by providing lessons, during the school day, that target fitness and nutrition in the 4th grade classrooms and in the physical education classroom. After school, students receive more instruction in fitness and nutrition at the recreation centers. Look for information coming home about our school's family nights to get the whole family involved in exercising and eating healthy. Currently there are 12 school sites partnering with 12 recreation centers to fight the obesity epidemic.

The PEP kick off that started the grant this year had a turn out of approximately 350 students and family members. This event was free for all and included: Mayor Chris Coleman, Carrie Tollefson-Olympic Runner, The Power of The Pyramid Play, Radio Disney, free food, Chef Michelle Sugiyama, dance instructors, jump castle, United States Tennis Association, Steps to a Healthier MN-St. Paul, many vendors with fitness and nutrition information, along with active activities, games and prizes. Fun was had by all!

PEP Grant Family Fun Night for Prosperity Fourth Grade Students and their parents will be at Prosperity on October 26, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We hope to see all fourth grade families there!
