Nurturing Strategic Thinkers at Prosperity Heights Elementary
Many fortunate students are participating in a Thursday afternoon Chess Club, due largely to the insight and vision of Dennis Peterson, a retired actuary, who lives in the nearby community. Mr. Peterson has been an avid chess player most of his life and desired to share his knowledge of the academic benefits and social skills children would acquire through understanding and participating in the ancient game of chess.
After contacting the principal several years ago to present his idea, Mr. Peterson collaborated with the Family & Community Involvement Coordinator at the school, Marilyn Lindstrom, to obtain funding through a grant. The Actuarial Foundation awarded the school $23,000 over a two year period to bring this dream to life.
Research proves that chess enhances problem solving and comprehension skills of players. Students learn self-control, respect for others, and sportsmanship in addition to the importance of planning, patience, and dealing with the consequences of poor choices and bad decisions, all of which are lifelong skills. As a mathematician and champion for education, Mr. Peterson expects to see an increase in the academic skill levels of students who become proficient chess players.
